Mr. Riley began his career in forensic science with the Michigan State Police at the Headquarters Laboratory in East Lansing in 1990. He completing a mandatory three-year training period, which included training from the FBI, US Secret Service, the IRS, and the Indiana State Police. Upon completion, Mr. Riley began working cases independently (with technical & administrative reviews by a senior examiner). Mr. Riley completed approximately 2,000 criminal cases while working for the Michigan State Police Forensic Science Division, retiring in 2012.
Mr. Riley obtained certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Forensic Document Examiners (ABFDE) in May of 1996 and has been continually recertified every five years since. He is a member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences Questioned Document Section (AAFS) and a former member of the American Society of Questioned Document Examiners (ASQDE). Mr. Riley is a forensic science consultant operating a laboratory specializing in forensic document examination, laboratory accreditation preparation, laboratory supervision, administration and troubleshooting.
Forensic document examination involves all aspects of documents as evidence, including handwriting and handprinting examinations, ink differentiation and dating, paper, production methods, indentations, and many others areas. Forensic document examination is one discipline of the many forensic sciences.
Mr. Riley has over thirty years of experience in forensic science, in accredited government laboratories and private laboratories, nationally and internationally.
